Bye-Bye Popcorn provides both services you need to begin: a non-destructive popcorn-ceiling removal estimate and the required paid asbestos inspection and testing. The estimate portion includes measuring, reviewing access and ceiling condition, and pricing the anticipated work without disturbing the material.
With your authorization, our South Carolina-licensed asbestos building inspector can complete the inspection and collect the required representative samples during that same appointment. The sampling, accredited laboratory analysis, and written report are paid services. Testing is required before work; completing it during the estimate visit is recommended because a separate return visit costs more.
Testing is based on the materials the planned work may actually disturb—not simply the age of the home or one visible layer. Depending on the scope, that can include popcorn texture, joint compound, plaster, patching material, adhesive, or another layer that may be scraped, sanded, drilled, cut, or repaired.
If a material tests positive, Bye-Bye Popcorn can coordinate the asbestos-positive ceiling project. Regulated removal is performed by properly licensed abatement personnel, while a separate licensed air-monitoring company performs the monitoring and clearance required for that scope. Restoration begins only after the required clearance is complete.

WHY TESTING MATTERS
Asbestos-related disease can appear decades after exposure.
Asbestos cannot be confirmed by sight. When asbestos-containing material is scraped, sanded, drilled, cut, or removed improperly, microscopic fibers can become airborne and be inhaled. Testing before disturbance is how we replace guessing with documented information.

A positive result changes the licensed team and regulatory path used for removal. It does not mean the ceiling must remain untouched forever.
Confirm the report and scope
The written inspection report identifies the asbestos-containing material, location, quantity, condition, and project area. The required project category, notice, and work plan are confirmed before scheduling.
Licensed abatement team removes it
A properly licensed asbestos-abatement contractor, supervisor, and workers establish containment and perform the regulated removal, cleanup, and disposal. Our regular painting crew does not perform this abatement work.
Separate air-monitoring company verifies the area
A licensed air sampler who is independent of the abatement contractor performs the monitoring, visual review, sampling, and written clearance required for the project.
Ceiling restoration resumes after clearance
Once the regulated work and required clearance are complete, the project can move into eligible ceiling repair, smoothing, primer, and paint.

Before scheduling any ceiling disturbance, the licensed inspector identifies homogeneous areas, collects the required representative samples, and obtains accredited laboratory results and a written report. Testing at a later return visit costs more.
Select the removal path
Acceptable negative documentation leads to standard popcorn removal. Positive material moves into a licensed asbestos-abatement scope with separate air monitoring and clearance as required.
Clear, repair, and finish
After standard removal—or after the asbestos work area receives required clearance—we complete eligible repairs, smoothing, primer, and paint.

Before we

Is the popcorn-ceiling removal estimate free?+
Yes—the removal estimate is free. The required asbestos inspection, sample collection, and accredited-laboratory testing are not free. Before we touch any ceiling, we must have laboratory results showing whether asbestos is present in the materials our work may disturb. With your authorization, our licensed inspector can collect the samples during the estimate appointment.
Is testing required if I hire you?+
Yes. Bye-Bye Popcorn requires project-specific inspection and laboratory testing before any popcorn-ceiling project we accept is scheduled for scraping, sanding, drilling, repair, or removal.
Can the estimate and testing be completed during the same visit?+
Yes. That is the option we recommend. We can complete the estimate and, with your authorization, our South Carolina-licensed asbestos building inspector can collect the required samples during the same appointment. Testing and laboratory services remain separately priced.
How much does testing cost?+
Limited testing for a popcorn-ceiling project generally starts around $240. The final price depends on square footage, the number of suspect materials or homogeneous areas, the required number of samples, and laboratory needs.
Can you tell whether a ceiling has asbestos by looking at it?+
No. Appearance alone is not enough to confirm whether a material contains asbestos.
Does every surface receive a separate sample?+
Every suspect material our work may disturb must be addressed. A licensed inspector groups materials that are uniform in color and texture into homogeneous areas and follows representative-sampling requirements; that is different from sampling every square foot.
Do you inspect and collect samples?+
Yes. A South Carolina-licensed asbestos building inspector performs the limited inspection and collects representative samples. The samples are analyzed by an accredited laboratory.
Do you test only homes built before 1981?+
No. Construction date alone does not prove that an unknown material is asbestos-free. Our policy requires suspect materials in the planned disturbance scope to be evaluated and documented regardless of the home's age.
Do you handle asbestos-containing popcorn ceilings?+
Yes. Bye-Bye Popcorn can coordinate the complete asbestos-positive ceiling project. The regulated removal itself is performed by a properly licensed asbestos-abatement team—not our regular painting crew—and a separate licensed air-monitoring company handles required monitoring and clearance.
Why is the air-monitoring company separate?+
South Carolina does not accept abatement air-sampling data from an air sampler employed by or under contract with the abatement contractor. Keeping the licensed air-monitoring role separate protects the integrity of the monitoring and clearance process.
Is this automatically a whole-home asbestos inspection?+
No. The standard service is limited to the rooms, materials, and layers identified in the written project scope. Additional areas require an expanded scope.
